Regarded as Arbitrary

The butterflies were dead. A whiff of rotten eggs had vanquished

innocence; and the world is mostly divided between madmen who

seat those tourists who wish for an uninterrupted view of the

unbelievably festive black. Here they were now, in blue, disputing

the conical white hat of a pierrot. Shaking her head, she still stared,

wished it were a stranger’s face. Not all my memorizing had prepared

beyond the power of any single mind to possess it. Nevertheless,

I was struck at first by what seemed to be the merriment but

observing that the side of the figure which is turned away from

cutting off her attempt at polite refusal and taking her arm

should have what they want. . . . You have seen all these wonderful

hopes probably not fulfilled: certainly not fulfilled, or

deals with merchants are being negotiated with keen urgency.
